The Rolex Explorer Ref. 214270 is the only Explorer in the model's history to measure 39mm — a brief but celebrated chapter that ran from 2010 to 2021 before Rolex returned the Explorer to its original 36mm footprint. Within its production run, the reference exists in two dial variants: the MK1, introduced in 2010 with non-luminous solid white gold Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9; and the MK2, revised at Baselworld 2016 with fully luminous Chromalight-filled numerals and a longer, properly proportioned handset. The 214270 MK2 resolved the main criticism of its predecessor and is broadly considered the definitive expression of the 39mm Explorer concept.
